This modified medium is created by substituting Casein enzymic hydrolysate and Bile salt mixture with Veg hydrolysate and Synthetic detergent No. I. This alteration ensures that the medium is free from the risks associated with BSE/TSE. EC Broth (Veg) is an adaptation of the medium initially developed by Hajna and Perry. Just like the traditional medium, EC Broth (Veg) serves various purposes. It is utilized for quantifying Escherichia coli populations in seawater and shellfish, as demonstrated by Tennant et al. Additionally, it is applied for confirming the presence of Escherichia coli in frozen foods and nut meats, a procedure outlined by Fishbein and Surkiewicz.
This versatile medium can also be employed, much like the conventional version, in the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique for examining water, wastewater, and food samples. However, it is important to note that it should not be used for the direct isolation of coliforms. Instead, prior enrichment in a presumptive medium is recommended to optimize the recovery of fecal coliforms.
